Archbishop Allen Vigneron of the Archdiocese of Detroit remarked on current events regarding Roe v. Wade in his Jan. 22 homily during Sunday Mass at the Cathedral of the Most Blessed Sacrament, which fell on Sanctity of Life Sunday; a report from Detroit Catholic said.

This Sanctity of Life Sunday marked the 50th anniversary of the landmark Roe v. Wade decision.

"Today, on the 50th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, we gathered for Mass in recognition that the fight for life continues and that we are 'united in the same mind and in the same purpose' to bring Christ’s light and salvation to all those who wander in darkness," Vigneron said in a Jan. 22 Twitter post.

While many pro-lifers are celebrating the overturning of Roe v. Wade, the state of Michigan in November passed Proposal 3, also known as the Reproductive Freedom for All initiative; a Click On Detroit report said. Proposal 3 gives reproductive rights to all, which are basically the same rights that the people of Michigan had under Roe v. Wade.

National Sanctity of Human Life Day was instituted in 1984 by President Ronald Reagan, 11 years after the passage of Roe v. Wade. It usually falls on the third Sunday in January. Across the country, pastors, churches and pro-life organizations utilize the day to raise awareness of what they call threats against human life.

Vigneron's homily was filled with hope on this Sanctity of Life Sunday.

“In God’s good time, he shall overcome, and in the meantime, the Lord is bringing good even out of evil,” the archbishop said. “Even out of what seems to be darkness, he can bring life because he is the Lord. He brings a good; a victory that hastens the ultimate triumph of the light that dispels the gloom of us who live in the shadow of death."
