The Archdiocese of Detroit will celebrate a vigil Mass on the eve of the Pentecost.

“You're invited to celebrate the Vigil Mass for the Solemnity of Pentecost on Saturday, June 4, 2022,” the archdiocese posted on Facebook this week. The Mass starts at 7 p.m. and will be held at the Cathedral of the Most Blessed Sacrament. Archbishop Allen H. Vigneron will be the celebrant.

The Pentecost is celebrated 50 days after Jesus' resurrection and approximately 10 days after his ascension into Heaven, a report on Christianity.com said. It marks the day when Jesus' followers were gathered inside of a room. Suddenly, it sounded as if a gust of wind had rushed into the room, and tongues of fire appeared over the heads of Jesus' followers.

Acts says, "You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you," Christianity.com continued. In keeping with the Scripture, the Holy Spirit filled everyone, and they began to speak in tongues. A crowd gathered around, and people in the crowd could hear Jesus' followers speaking in the listener’s native language. Peter preached to the crowd about Jesus, and that day 3,000 people converted.

Before Jesus ascended into Heaven, he directed his disciples to wait patiently for the arrival of the Holy Spirit, the Guardian said. Pentecost marks the descent of the Holy Spirit and the beginning of the Church. The disciples initially had been frightened after Jesus' departure, but the Holy Spirit filled them with courage and strength, which they used as they went out and proclaimed the Gospel.

Pentecost is celebrated seven Sundays after Easter. This year, it falls on June 5. Pentecost is also called Whit Sunday, White Sunday or Whitsun.
