There are two aspects of faith; Fr. Paul Redmond, pastor of St. Thomas More Catholic Student Parish in Kalamazoo, said in the church's Aug. 9 bulletin.

One is personal.

“This can be spent through prayer, quiet meditation, spiritual books/videos, study of Sacred Scripture, the Sacraments, etc.,” Redmond said.

The second is communal.

“We are a people of community,” Redmond continued. “Our faith asks us to share with the community!”

The two forms of faith are related, with each strengthening the other.

"Our personal growth can’t help but strengthen the community, if we don’t keep it private,” Redmond said. “This is a good opportunity for us to discern how our personal lives are affecting others in the community. We need community to grow in our personal relationship with Christ, and we need a personal relationship with Christ to help our community grow in faith!”

When Jesus walked on the water, St. Peter's personal faith was tested, Fr. Redmond stated.

"Walking on water is an act of great faith for St. Peter," he concluded. "St. Peter could even stay focused on Christ, even when he starts to sink. This is the faith we need in our lives to face whatever storm comes our way, to always stay focused on Christ."
