The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) praised the U.S. House of Representatives for passing two pro-life bills recently.

“We commend the House of Representatives for passing legislation to protect innocent children from infanticide, and urge the Senate to follow suit,” Diocese of Arlington Bishop Michael F. Burbidge, who chairs the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ (USCCB) Committee for Pro-Life Activities, said in a letter to the House. “Babies who are born alive during the process of an abortion deserve compassionate care and medical attention – just the same as any other newborn baby.”

The Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act, or H.R. 26, passed 220-210 along party lines, with 220 Republicans voting yes and 210 Democrats voting no; Angelus News reported. The bill would mandate that any child who survives an abortion procedure receive the necessary level of medical care as any other baby born at the same gestational age.

The second bill denounces violence against pro-life facilities, groups and churches; Angelus News added. It passed by a vote of 222-209. This bill was put forth after a string of violence that began in June 2022 after the U.S. Supreme Court announced its decision in the Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization case, which overturned Roe v. Wade.

Neither proposal is expected to be taken up by the Senate, which is still controlled by Democrats.
