The “Saint Michael: Meet the Angel” documentary film will hit the big screens Thursday at select theaters, and three Detroit-area movie houses will show it.

The film focuses on Michael, the most powerful being under the Trinity and Mary, and his fight against evil. Wincenty Podobinski directed it.

"We present to you the story of St. Micheal the Archangel - in the Christian and Jewish tradition one of the most powerful heavenly beings,” the Facebook page posting says. “It was Michael who first stood up to Lucifer when he rebelled against God. The film shows the true victory of good over evil. It presents the figure of an Angel, as well as stories of people who experienced his intercession and great power in their lives.”

Catholics regard Michael as the greatest of the three archangels.

"I believe the Faith is being lost because we have lost our devotions. For example, the belief in Purgatory,” Oscar Delgado, the film’s producer, said in an interview for a LifeSite News article. “People actually believe these days that when you die you go to heaven and play with your dogs.”

Delgado talked about the history of the Gargano Shrine, which used to be a cave of devils until St. Michael consecrated it. “Do not consecrate the Shrine for I have already done this,” Michael is said to have told the local bishop. “Start offering the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass."

Delgado also discussed Pope Leo XIII's call to recite the St. Michael Prayer after a vision of an evil world.

”Your first line of defense is your Guardian Angel. If you don’t invoke his aid, you’re open to demonic attack,” Delgado recounted. “Your Guardian Angel is still there. But people don’t invoke their aid anymore.”

The film is being shown at a one-day special event Thursday, which is St. Michael's feast day. In Detroit, the AMC Fairlane Megastar 21, Cinemark Southland Center and XD and Phoenix Theatres State Wayne have 7 p.m. shows. Those who live elsewhere can check the Fathom Events website to see if there is a theater near you.

North Texas Catholics previewed the film, saying it "gives us insight into this defender of the Church, opponent of Satan, and rescuer of souls at the hour of death. He is portrayed as a friend and a warrior for today.”

When it comes to the Gargano Shrine, Father Wladyslaw Suchy, the rector of the Shrine, talks about the history behind it. A high point includes when Padre Pio famously visited the site and developed a devotion to St. Michael.

The film shows famous artworks, churches and cultural experiences dedicated to St. Michael and his defeat over Satan.

“I believe that attending the film on the same day as St. Michael's feast day will give each person a special grace in understanding the power of St. Michael and honor him by learning so much more about him,” Delgado said in the North Texas Catholics article. “Knowledge is critical in being able to invoke the Holy Angels, especially St. Michael.”

St. Michael is the leader of all the holy angels and head of God's army, Catholic.org explains. He has four main responsibilities: to fight Satan and his evil works, escort the faithful to Heaven, be a champion and leader of the Church and call humanity from earth to be judged.

As St. Michael is an angel who didn’t live on earth as a human, little is known besides what it is in the Bible. Catholic.org notes that the book of Daniel calls St. Michael a helper who will stand for "the children of the people.” In the Epistle of St. Jude, St. Michael guards the tombs of Moses and Eve, battling with the devil. In Revelation St. Michael is mentioned in his battle with the dragon.
