In the wake of the Supreme Court’s recent ruling on abortion rights, the Michigan Catholic Conference cheered the decision while urging Catholics to step up and support pregnant mothers.

"We are saddened by the fear and anger that has reverberated across our land since a draft of this opinion was leaked to the public,” the Michigan Catholic Conference said in a release. “In light of these concerns, we wish to make clear that no woman should face pregnancy alone.”

The Supreme Court in a 6-3 decision announced Friday said it was returning power to the states to determine the legality of abortion.

“The Constitution makes no reference to abortion, and no such right is implicitly protected by any constitutional provision, including the one on which the defenders of Roe and Casey now chiefly rely — the Due Process Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment,” Justice Samuel Alito said, according to CNBC, in his legal opinion on the matter. “It is time to heed the Constitution and return the issue of abortion to the people’s elected representatives.”

Michigan could go back to enforcing a pre-Roe abortion ban, but the decision could come down to the state's Supreme Court, NPR reported. Democrat Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has vowed to veto any attempt by the Republican-controlled Legislature to enact pro-life legislation.

The Catholic Church realizes that some women might find themselves pregnant at inconvenient times or under less-than-ideal circumstances. With that, it said Catholics need to do their part to help.

“Every pregnant woman should know there is a community of compassion and support waiting to help her and her unborn or infant child,” the Michigan group said. "We empathize with women who struggle with daily challenges that may affect their decision to carry their baby to term… The pro-life movement must redouble its efforts to ensure every woman has the support she needs throughout her pregnancy and beyond… We are all called to walk with moms in need, and we encourage all Michiganders to join us in this effort.”

Many organizations, including Catholic Charities, provide support for pregnant women, often for free. Catholic Charities offers counseling and guidance for mothers, helping them come up with plans for parenting or for adoption. Its help extends beyond birth, offering women support for the rest of their lives.

The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB), meanwhile, thanked pro-life advocates for not giving up the fight over the past 50 years.

“(Since Roe v Wade was passed), millions of our fellow citizens have worked together peacefully to educate and persuade their neighbors about the injustice of abortion, to offer care and counseling to women, and to work for alternatives to abortion, including adoption, foster care, and public policies that truly support families,” the bishops said in a release. “We share their joy today and we are grateful to them.”

More than 63,000,000 American babies have been aborted while Roe v Wade was in effect, statistics from the Guttmacher Institute show.

The issue is one of the more decisive ones in America, but the USCCB urged Americans to bridge the divide peacefully.

“Now is the time to begin the work of building a post-Roe America. It is a time for healing wounds and repairing social divisions; it is a time for reasoned reflection and civil dialogue, and for coming together to build a society and economy that supports marriages and families, and where every woman has the support and resources she needs to bring her child into this world in love.”
