The Archdiocese of Detroit celebrated several Masses and liturgies throughout the Easter Triduum, inviting all to participate in the Easter vigil.

The Easter Triduum is a three-day period that is treated as one day liturgically, according to the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB). It begins on the evening of Holy Thursday, carries over through Good Friday and Holy Saturday, and concludes on the evening of Easter Sunday.

“The single celebration of the Triduum marks the end of the Lenten season and leads to the Mass of the #Resurrection of the Lord at the #EasterVigil,” the archdiocese posted on Facebook.

The Archdiocese of Detroit had special Masses for the Lord’s Supper on Thursday, Good Friday, and will celebrate the Mass of the Resurrection Sunday, according to the Facebook post. It urged parishioners to attend as many as they wanted, inviting them to “Please join us for our Triduum liturgies!”

The Last Supper is significant because that is when Jesus instituted the Sacrament of the Eucharist, offering his body and blood to his disciples in the form of bread and wine, the USCCB said.

Jesus also instituted the priesthood, entrusting to his apostles the legacy of the Church, according to the USCCB. The celebrant during Holy Thursday Masses washes the feet of several participants. This is seen as an act of humility that replicates what Jesus did with his disciples.

Easter marks the Resurrection, according to the USCCB website. The Resurrection is the cornerstone of the Christian faith. It comes three days after the crucifixion of Jesus.

The Resurrection confirmed that Jesus was the true son of God and displayed to all who believe in him that they will be granted eternal life in Heaven, according to Christianity.com.
