Funeral arrangements are scheduled Friday, March 11 at the Cathedral of Saint Andrew for Bishop Emeritus Robert Rose.

Rose, emeritus of the Diocese of Grand Rapids, died on Ash Wednesday, March 2 at St. Ann’s Home in Grand Rapids. He was 92.

Known to be the second bishop of the Diocese of Gaylord from 1981 to 1989, Rose was also installed in 1989 as the ninth bishop of the Diocese of Grand Rapids, where he served for 14 years before being granted senior priest status in October 2003.

The Diocese also credits him with being responsible for the formation of the Catholic Foundation of West Michigan and for regionalizing the Hispanic Ministry.

“Today, on Ash Wednesday, the Diocese of Grand Rapids has lost a man who dedicated his life to the Catholic faith,” Bishop David Walkowiak said in a Diocese of Grand Rapids press release

“Bishop Robert Rose served the Church in the state of Michigan for more than 65 years. “In each office – relying upon the grace of Holy Orders, a Spirit-filled wisdom, a compassionate heart and a delightful wit, he placed it all at the service of the Lord who anointed him for this vocation. He valued the voice of the laity and ensured they were part of the decision-making process. He brought kindness to every interaction and empowered Catholics to share their faith. Please join me in offering prayers for his eternal rest and comfort to Bishop Rose’s family.”

In addition to being open to the public, services for Rose will also be livestreamed on the diocesan website and Facebook page. Friday's funeral Mass will also be televised live locally on Antenna TV.

Survived by several nieces and nephews and their families, Bishop Rose was preceded in death by his parents (Mrs. Everett (June) Wittenbach) and (Mr. James Rose) and siblings.
