Bishop David Walkowiak of the Diocese of Grand Rapids ordained seven new deacons recently at the Cathedral of Saint Andrew.
“Years in the making, Saturday’s ordination of seven new deacons was a day of celebration for our diocese,” the Diocese of Grand Rapids announced on Twitter.
The Diocese of Grand Rapids reported that the deacons are Daniel Esch, Michael Hollern, Thu Le, Donato Perez, Brian Piecuch, Thomas Roberts and Gregory Sokolowski.
Roman Catholic deacons are ordained members of the Catholic Clergy, with deacon originating from the Greek word “diakonos,” which means to serve, according to About Catholics.
About Catholics reported that the distinction from deacons and priests is that they cannot celebrate Mass, consecrate the Eucharist, hear confessions, conduct an Anointing of the Sick, or officiate a wedding while those in the Permanent Diaconate being allowed to be married so long as they were in the courtship before being ordained.
America Magazine reports that there are roughly 19,000 deacons currently in the country.
"As our world continues to grapple with the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, permanent deacons provide an encouraging witness to the love and mercy of Christ," said Bishop James F. Checchio of Metuchen, N.J., chairman of the U.S. bishops' Committee on Clergy, Consecrated Life and Vocations.
