Bishop Walter Hurley, from the Diocese of Gaylord, has offered prayers and comfort to those who have suffered various losses from the Dec. 10-11 tornadoes across the midwest, which claimed more than 75 lives and wrought huge economic damage on Kentucky, specifically.

A total of six states were hit by the tornadoes.

“My heart goes out to all the victims of the tornadoes that tore through Kentucky and the surrounding states. Please join me in prayer for the souls lost and the many other victims who have lost so much, that they may feel the loving hand of God in these difficult times. We pray also for the first responders who continue to search for victims, in thanksgiving for their bravery and for the peace of mind they bring to many families,” Hurley, apostolic administrator for the Diocese of Gaylord shared on Facebook.

According to the New York Times, “The storm that hit western Kentucky had winds of up to 165 miles per hour.  The tornado’s footprint was three-quarters of a mile wide.  Advances in technology have led to more accurate warnings when tornadoes are coming, but people still die as a result of not having a safe place to shelter or making decisions such as going in to work or going outside.”

Catholic Charities is partnering with local parishes to ensure that the proper help and resources are directed to who and where they are most needed, such as water, diapers, baby food and non-perishable foods.
