The Diocese of Grand Rapids is introducing an initiative by the name of “Civilize It,” which expounds on “Fratelli Tutti” by Pope Francis.
The goal of the initiative is to encourage more civil political discourse that is also constructive in nature.
Individuals who are interested in taking part in the initiative can sign a pledge to do so.
“It’s time for #ABetterKindofPolitics. Join Catholics across the country pledging to engage in political discourse with charity and respect whether during an election cycle, or at the local school board or city council meeting. The podcast included in the diocese’s tweet features a discussion of the pope’s encyclical, by guiding Catholics to be civil in political discourse for the common good of all.
Those committing to the pledge of “Civilize It” will be committing to being charitable, clear and creative in their political discourse.
"It is important to be charitable in order to remember that everyone is made in the image of God and has their own opinion. Clarity is required to ensure that we are being clear-minded and not becoming biased in our information. Finally, it is important to be creative, in order to find solutions that are good for all," according to the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops.
