St. Peter Parish took part in the Archdiocese of Detroit’s sixth annual Mercy in Action Day of Service on Oct. 16, holding a food drive to give back to the community at large.
The action day is just one of the Catholic Charities of Southeast Michigan’s days of service.
“This is an opportunity for people of all ages to reach out to a community in need. “There will be volunteers from various churches and schools to help with this huge effort. All the people have to do is drive up with their vehicle. They do not have to get out of their car. Volunteers unload the vehicles and take the donation into the church basement to sort,” Debbie Goff-Legghio of St. Peter Parish said in a news release, according to Macomb Daily.
The Archdiocese says it always enjoys the help of thousands of volunteers throughout the many local parishes, all interested in giving back.
On Oct. 16, the St. Peter parking lot was transformed into a charitable scene, with volunteers accepting food donations from the community, in addition to laundry and cleaning supplies from 9 a.m. to noon.
The collected items were donated to the Aging Out program at Big Families of Michigan.
In years past, the event has had as many as 11,000 pounds of food donated to the St. Vincent de Paul chapter, with involvement from 49 Catholic parishes and schools.
