Even in the midst of the upheaval and uncertainty of the COVID-19 crisis, Knights of Columbus councils across the state continue to achieve Star Council Award status.
The councils persevered despite concerns over safety for self and loved ones, and the ongoing economic challenges faced by the organization while working to provide for the needy and simultaneously facing fundraising challenges.
In a release issued recently on the State Council of Michigan's website, Knights of Columbus State Deputy Walter Winkle congratulated the 101 councils around the state that met or exceeded the goals for the Star Council Award. While all reached at least 100% of their membership quota, all but 25 exceeded 100%, and 20 reached 200% or greater, receiving a multi-star award.
The Houghton Council Received a Ten Star Council Award, with 1,100% of their membership quota, according to Winkle’s letter. Cedar Springs and Canton both received the Five Star Council Award for 550% and 583%, respectively; and Clinton Township received the Triple Star Council Award for 350%.
Winkle said that this is a great time for councils to set their sites on the Star Council Award because Supreme has extended free membership in honor of the Beautification of Knights of Columbus Founder Fr. Michael McGivney.
Even those who do not have contacts within the organization but are interested in applying for membership can go to the Knights of Columbus website to find out more.
The site has extensive information about what the Knights of Columbus do in their communities, the benefits of membership and the organization’s principles and commitment to both assisting members in living truthfully in their Catholic faith and demonstrating that faith in their communities.
Winkle also encouraged members to discuss the Beautification of McGivney with their parish leadership, and address the possibility of announcing his Beatification and encouraging parish members to join the Knights of Columbus during regular Mass.
