According to a July 29 press release, the Michigan Association of Nonpublic Schools (MANS), along with 37 other organizations, has filed an amicus curiae brief in a lawsuit against U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos.
MANS Executive Director Brian Broderick said in the news release that the association joined in the filing of the amicus brief because to get the most benefit for students who have been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, funds provided under the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act must be distributed equally.
"To do otherwise unfairly punishes students and their families who make great sacrifice to provide an education that works best for their individual circumstances," Broderick said.
The brief was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California. If the plaintiffs are successful in the case, Michigan school districts will be able to withhold millions of dollars from non-public schools. The interim final rule is being challenged because the organizations joined in the amicus brief believe all students should benefit from the funding and not just public school students.
