Christ the King Catholic Church in Detroit shared some updates in its June 28 bulletin on how their parish is serving those in need during these uncertain times.
The church provides hot meals with drinks every week via carry-out service.
“It is evident that our neighbors who utilize the soup kitchen miss not being able to eat in the dining room. Our volunteers miss the personal interaction with our neighbors, and our neighbors miss the volunteers,” the bulletin read.

The soup kitchen continues to be able to provide more than 300 meals weekly, despite having to be more stringent with its sanitation practices and having a smaller number of volunteers working at any given time.
The church’s food pantry is now a drive-thru pantry and those coming for food will have it placed in their trunk via contactless delivery. Parishioners who lack a vehicle may still walk up to receive their food.
“Each consumer receives non-perishable food, fresh produce that includes both vegetables and fruit, bread, pastries and meat,” the announcement stated. “Frequently, we are able to provide milk and eggs.”
The church is able to provide 140 individuals and families with food every week through the pantry ministry.
The Conference of St. Vincent de Paul cannot offer coffee and donuts, as there is not sufficient space in the office lobby, but the church is looking for ways to make a morning snack available.
“Any request for assistance will be reviewed by the SVdP team, and every attempt to help will be made if the conference has the means to do so,” said the bulletin. “We are able to make copies or fax documents as needed. Cleaning supplies, laundry soap or personal-hygiene items are given upon request. Baby food including formula is available through the pantry.”
The bulletin's announcement concluded by saying that while it is sad that the church is missing out on much of the community service and fellowship it would normally have to offer, it is a blessing that many of the ministries are able to continue.
